Michael Moore has succeeded at twisting events and reality into entertaining “documentaries.” Unfortunately, he suffers from delusions about the realities of politics, business, and economics.
He lives in a world that doesn’t take into account the costs and benefits of freedom and democracy. The “show” he won an Oscar for is a great example of his delusions. The theme of the show is that the US has too many guns. In a recent commentary on this film, a writer pointed to Canada, which has fewer guns and fewer crimes, as evidence of our problem. Below is my response to that commentary:”If the US has 11,000 gun deaths per year compared to 300 in Canada, that’s only .00004 per capita in the US vs. .00001 per capita in Canada. Since there are so many more gun owners in the US compared to Canada, it would be likely that there are many more gun deaths per gun owner in Canada than in the US. What are the Canadians doing wrong? Why are they so violent compared to citizens in the US? Could it be a product of their leadership that condones terrorism attacks on the US? Is it because of such insensitivity at the top that the general population is so callous? Could freedom to own guns actually result in more responsibility for gun owners? Michael Moore should look into those types of deep, interesting questions, instead of focusing on simple assumptions about more complex issues that he doesn’t understand.”
I’m not strongly pro-gun. But I am strongly against liberals who use sketchy statistics to justify their beliefs. And after Michael Moore’s shameful appearance at the Oscars, I feel even more strongly that he is a detriment to our society. He dared to say “Shame on you” to the President of the United States in an inappropriate forum, not so much because he believed in the politics of his comments, but obviously because he knew it would bring him publicity and promote his films. Shame on HIM! It is some consolation that he was booed so vigorously even by the left-leaning Hollywood crowd.
