Decision Time 2008

November 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Here is a clear summary of the choices for President that should help any undecided decide.

Barrack Obama is an attractive choice for many reasons. He’s an eloquent, motivating personality that may be able to inspire the country to succeed at a time when the economy is faltering and many American’s feel our international diplomatic policies have been flawed. His victory could and should instill a sense of pride for all Americans to see a minority elected as President for the first time. His youth also gives an aura of energy and a potential long-term view toward solving the country’s big problems. There are many positives about Senator Obama and this may result in some good, since it seems he is poised to win this election. Unfortunately, I believe that the negatives outweigh the positives

On the Economy, it is a fact that higher taxes on any class, and increased government intervention will impede economic growth. The very basics of economic theory prove the “dead weight loss” associated with government intervention. Obama’s attempts to segment tax increases by income level seems like an easy way to buy votes. The success of this tactic should be outweighed by most Americans’ belief in the American dream. Taxing the wealthy ignores the blood sweat and tears that it takes to get to a high level of income, except for lottery winners and Hollywood actors. Any time you diminish the reward for hard work, you decrease the potential for hard work and therefore damage the economy. Although McCain does not have a great track record on supporting business and keeping taxes low, he has vastly better views than the liberal proposals of Barrack Obama.

On social/moral issues, the one defining issue is abortion, particularly Barrack Obama’s support for partial birth abortion. If he doesn’t believe a fetus is a live person with a spirit sent by God, he can’t be proven wrong, and shouldn’t really be judged by another religion’s standards. But what abortion does — particularly extreme, cruel procedures like partial birth abortion — is diminish society’s respect for life. For many, creating a human life is the closest thing to a divine experience they ever have. Procreation is an extraordinary, beautiful power. Supporting policies that enable such an easy termination of pregnancy reduces the respect for life in our society and leads to a host of other problems.

On foreign policy – it is clear that McCain has the experience that Obama so clearly lacks. Obama has proven himself naïve on many occasions through comments that many find distressing. With only a few months in the US Senate outside of campaign time, he just does not have the experience to lead the country that is supposed to lead the world. Just as he does not understand the harm in killing economic incentives through socialist policies, he similarly does not understand the dangers produced by softening our stance toward our enemies and the incentives that result from such an approach.

Most importantly, the basic philosophies of the candidates are so different. John McCain is a war hero who has shown over the span of several decades that he is willing, time and time again, to put aside his personal and often his party’s priorities to do what is best for his country. He has a clear track record and we know what type of president he will be. As a friend mentioned, he would be too old for any book deal after his presidency. He’s an old hero just trying to do all he can for the country he loves.

Barrack Obama on the other hand seems to have a lust for power. He has gained positions of power through elections that have all been mired in controversy. He has also shown that the people he respects and those he has as mentors and friends are continually, repeatedly, people who do not like America. They want to change America to something very different – where hard work and success are not respected and honor for our great history is looked down upon. It is true that many people in the world do not like America right now, but most people would still die to come to come here. Obama wants to turn America into a place where there will be less distance between the poor and wealthy, but where all will be worse off. His intentions may be good, but he has a profoundly un-American philosophy and one that appeals more to the weakness in Americans, not to their strengths.
